COURTHOUSE RESTORATION

The historic Ross County Courthouse was originally built in the 1800s with additions put on in later years. One of those additions happened to be a clock tower, which in early 2005 was becoming very unsafe due to weathering issues. Upon inspection of the tower and the entire façade of the Courthouse, it was determined that several safety issues were present and needed to be addressed. The Ross County Commissioners hired NRC Engineering to develop specifications for the restoration of the deficient areas of the building.

After competitively bidding the restoration project according to Ohio Revised Code guidelines, General Restoration Corporation was chosen to complete the project. The project included: re-grouting of all brick and stone joints, stone veneer replacement on the Main Street side of the Courthouse, selected window replacement, roof repair/replacement as needed and the refurbishing of the clock tower. Of these elements, the tower, by far, required the most time and expertise. Much of the exterior wood was removed, as was the entire top portion of the tower, including the dome. A metal shell was formed to replicate the shape of wooden tower and the top portion was formed completely of metal and topped with a copper dome. This was all done to preserve the historic look of the building.

The restoration project was completed late in 2006 for a total cost of around $900,000.
